In 270AD, it was decreed by Emporer Claudius II that all engagaments and marriages were to be outlawed as he believed that love and loved ones were keeping his men from joining the army. However, there were two priests, Valentine and Marius, who were still secretly performing marriage ceremonies. On February 14th, Valentine was caught, but not before sending his own final love letter, signed 'From your Valentine'.
